Mary, a nude portrait born in 2002 after the artist’s brush with mortality, marks a turning point in Chiao’s practice. Convalescence brought reflection: the academy’s lessons, the search for new methods. Transparent paints and a near-grisaille approach yielded a canvas of luminous restraint, so compelling that it drew the attention of Dean Mai Volfovich Dantsig and was acquired by the Belarus State Academy of Arts.
