Artwork Description:
Mary is a version of a nude portrait created by Nicholaas Chiao in 2002, shortly after a serious illness that nearly took his life. During the illness, the artist was thinking a lot about his practice of painting in the academy and about better methods. He decided to deploy more transparent paints and to use near grisaille treatment of a nude form, with pre-mixed colors. As a result, this academic painting appeared, and it was so successful that even the Dean of Painting faculty Mai Volfovich Dantsig noted the canvas, and it was later acquired by the fund of Belarus State Academy of Arts.
